I Need Your Help!
For those of you who are new to The Teller, you may not know that I am being sued by Storey County Commissioner Lance Gilman for defamation. 7 of the 8 charges have been thrown out, but one remains.
Because I invoked the shield law during my deposition refusing to reveal my sources of information, we are being required to demonstrate that we operate as a newspaper or periodical and that I am a reporter.
On June 26, 2018 the Honorable James Wilson sent my lawyers an order letting us know that we need to provide compelling evidence that The Teller is a source of news for Storey County.
If you believe that The Teller is a “newspaper or periodical” and that I am “a reporter”. PLEASE send me a physical snail mail letter TODAY.
We need to include your letter in our reply on Friday July 13th. That means I need to receive it and send it to my lawyer before that.
Write the letter in your own words and let Honorable Judge Wilson know that you consider The Teller a news source and that you consider me a reporter.
Send the letter to:
Sam Toll The Storey Teller Box 78, Virginia City, Nevada 89440
While my lawyer suggests that quality is better than quantity, I totally disagree. Yes, if you are a county official or employee feel free to send me your letter. But I believe that the ordinary citizen of Storey County is just as important.
The Free Press is a vital part of a thriving society. Our country’s Founding Fathers considered it the Fourth Pillar of the Republic. Please help to keep this notion alive in Storey County and the State of Nevada by sending your letter right now. This Minute. Now.
But Wait, There’s More.
It Makes me mad to have to ask, but this whole thing is costing me serious cash out of pocket. The reason the anit-SLAPP (“Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation.”) statute exists is to prevent people like Mr. Gilman from shutting people like me up by crushing us with lawsuits. The SLAPP statute is designed to prevent the little guy from being slowly bled to death by lengthy and costly legal manuverings.
This whole “prove you are a reporter” thing will cost me about $2000 to hire the court reporters and have my lawyers show up to argue the newsworthy merits of The Teller.
I know many of you have generously donated your hard earned money to my cause already. For that I am deeply grateful. If you could share this with a sympathetic friend or find it in your heart (and wallet) to pitch in what you can, I would be even more deeply grateful.
Together we can let Mr. Gilman know who really owns this county.
Below are my donation sources, or better yet, you could slip your generous donation in your letter.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP!
I do this for you and couldn’t do it without you.
