The latest episode of the Storey County Commission aired on interstellar TV. For those of you who missed it, Nicole Barde wrote about her observations on her underrated blog. During the meeting, Kris Thompson called me a liar for telling the truth and Steve Ayers referred to The Teller as a “hate site”. At least I think he was referring to The Teller because it is the only online news site in Storey County.
Ms. Barde’s prequel is and a link to her writeup is provided below. I wholeheartedly encourage you to read the entire post. Her description of the meeting is nothing like the summary provided by Commissioner Carmona. Barde includes facts and context while Carmona does not. Nothing new, and no surprise. Cultivating mushrooms is something the County is great at.
During public comment at the end of the meeting, I told the Commissioners (and the three people left in the room), you know you are over the target when you catch flac. This was true for Allied bombers over Germany in WWII and it is true here in The Richest Place On Earth. I also reminded Storey County District Attorney Anne Langer I had 7 public record requests languishing in her office, some from January.
Captain Underpants To The Rescue
TRIC Project Manager, former Blockchains LLC. Government Affairs manager, Storey County Planning Commissioner, Mustang Ranch Resident, and bunkmate (if you believe the narrative) of Lance Gilman and Jennifer Barnes-Milsap Kris Thompson also referred to me as the epitome of hypocrisy. According to Captain Underpants, on the one hand, I berate the County for being opaque and on the other, I won’t reveal my sources who told me Lance doesn’t live at the Mustang Ranch. By going to the Nevada Supreme Court to shield my sources as a reporter, I am somehow most malevolent. In her piece, Ms. Barde did a pretty good job of breaking down his comments, but I can’t help but pile on.
On the one hand, The County is compelled to open its books to any member of the public. You, me, your sister or a reporter from the New York Times. We all enjoy free and unfettered access to the books we pay to create and maintain.
On the other hand, the United States Supreme Court and Nevada Revised Statute explicitly protect a reporter’s right to protect the anonymity of his/her sources. Stone Cold Locked Down Fact.
Guys like Thompson and Commissioner Carmona howl like stuck hogs about the vexation of public records. Howl as they might, dems the rules.
Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
EVERYONE EXPRESSED CONFIDENCE IN AUSTIN TO DO THE JOB OF COUNTY MANAGER BUT EXPRESSED MORE CONFIDENCE THAT PAT WHITTEN WAS STILL NEEDED
LANCE SAYS THAT “$165 PER HOUR IS MINUSCULE” TO PAY PAT WHITTEN TO CONSULT FOR THE COUNTY….AND WITH NO CONTRACT CAP ON TOTAL EXPENDITURES THE SKY’S THE LIMIT! CARMONA VOTED NO ON THE CONTRACT
THE V&T FREIGHT DEPOT PURCHASE WAS APPROVED FOR $695K —THATS OVER $4 MILLION ON VC REAL ESTATE PURCHASES IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS…BUT NO MONEY FOR ADA PARKING ON C STREET OR A PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SOLUTION
THE $71K REFUND OF OVERCHARGED FEES WAS PUSHED OUT TO AUGUST…WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS?
Austin and Jay covered all of the procedural issues so I won’t.
First off I’d like to congratulate Austin on his first week in the job of County manager. Welcome to the kitchen!
