Community Chest Needs Assessment In Lockwood

I had the chance to attend the Community Chest Needs Assessment survey held in Lockwood on Thursday, July 26th. I was there with Storey County Commissioner Candidate Nicole Barde.

Executive Director Erik Schoen met with the community of Lockwood to discuss what people in the River District considered priorities for services that the Community Chest provides.

Nicole Barde posted her report on the meeting which I am cross-posting here. Enjoy.

SOME STATISTICS LEADING THE DISCUSSION:

MEDIAN AGE IN STOREY COUNTY IS 54.4 COMPARED TO 37.5 IN NEVADA

18.09 % OF THE POPULATION ARE FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN COMPARED TO 31% FOR NEVADA

49.04 % OF STOREY COUNTY RESIDENTS NEED FOOD ASSISTANCE BUT AREN’T ELIGIBLE COMPARED TO 25% IN NEVADA-THANKFULLY WE HAVE GREAT FOOD PANTRIES!

STOREY HAS NO LICENSED CHILDCARE FACILITIES, ONLY 5 HUD-ASSISTED HOUSING UNITS AND MOST ADULTS AND CHILDREN HAVE HEALTH COVERAGE.

Community Chest Needs Assessment
Eric Schoen leads the discussion of the needs of River District residents.

Eric Schoen, Executive Director, of the Community Chest, conducted a needs assessment at the Lockwood Senior Center with a group of 4-6 people to determine what types of services they as a community would need in the future. This was part of the Strategic Planning process that Community Chest goes thru every 3 years or so. There had been another session held in V.C. earlier in the week and Eric said that they will be publishing the summary of all of the needs assessments later on this year.

The areas of inquiry are:

  • Education and training
  • Employment
  • Household Budgeting
  • Food and Nutrition
  • Health Care ( children & adults, Seniors)
  • Energy
  • Housing
  • Transportation

Once again I am impressed at the quality of work that Eric and his team are doing. They presented a fantastic summary of some of the key demographics of our county which I have included HERE and suggest that everyone read. It’s short and concise.

In a nutshell, the stats show that Storey County has an older median age of 54.4 compared to the rest of Nevada ( 37.5) and the US ( 37.7). We have a higher percent of age 65+, lower percent of families with children under 18 and a higher percent of veterans than both Nevada and the US.  Read The Rest Of The Article Here

  1. IMPORTANT THINGS
I love how you (and Nicole) can turn seemingly mundane situations into
very important things to know about.
It occurs to me by looking at the pictures, and reading Nicole’s statistics) that
the average worker in Storey County (mostly living outside of Storey) is less
than 1/2 the age of the average Storey County citizen.
(Most of the workers are employed by the “Citizens’ gigafactory”)
    Thanks for the update!
